Emergency Medicine resident physicians are recently graduated physicians who are completing their specialty training in Emergency Medicine.  The goal of residency training is to become proficient and skilled enough to be certified as an Emergency Physician. The term "resident" is derived from how a physician in training will spend many hours residing at the hospital each week, sometimes approaching 80 or more hours.  Many TV shows (such as Scrubs, Grey's Anatomy, or ER) have dramatized their residency life in the hospital.  Realistically, their lives are not about romance or drama though, when not working or training in Emergency Medicine our residents are spending much of their time studying.

Resident physicians help staff 3 Emergency Departments in the Myrtle Beach area - 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.  They provide medical care for the community and for individuals when they need it most, while only earning a meager salary themselves, often less than nurses.  They evaluate and treat all patients in the Emergency Department, regardless of their ability to pay or not.  They resuscitate patients that are critically ill or involved in major trauma. They are on the front lines all-day everyday to ensure the community has a place to go for quality and compassionate emergency healthcare.

During the COVID-19 Pandemic, resident physicians played an active role in the medical response and care provided to the community.  For 2020, until vaccines were available in late December, resident physicians risked their lives and health to put the needs of the community first.

To honor and to help the residents, the Myrtle Beach Emergency Medicine Residency Foundation will:

Promote wellness activities to support the mental health of resident physicians.

Pay for education opportunities and guest lecturers.

Support medical research efforts.

Promote diversity and recruitment of medical students.

And will provide time to help decompress and balance their lives outside the hospital.
